Eugene Skinner built his cabin on the west side of Skinner Butte in 1846, and returned to settle in with his wife Mary and baby Mary in the spring of 1847. During that winter, desperate emigrants from the Applegate Trail used the empty cabin as a place of refuge.

This Skinner Cabin replica was built in 1972 by local historians and located in the trees on the north side of of Skinner Butte, then moved to this current location in Skinner Park in 1996 with historic pedestal signage added as part of the commemoration of the 1846 Applegate Trail.
