Collier House was built in 1885-86 by George Collier, a UO physics professor, and his sons, and is the second oldest building on the UO campus. When Collier retired in 1896, the university purchased the property, which initially served as a library. It next became the residence of Charles Chapman, the UO's second president. In subsequent years, the building has been home to two State of Oregon chancellors and five UO presidents, including Prince Lucien Campbell and Donald Erb. For many years, it also served as an intellectual and cultural center of the university, hosting concerts, talks, dinners, and visiting dignitaries.
