Nancy Gowins’ love
of history led her to conduct an exhaustive study on
the Lewis & Clark Expedition which began her journey into historical
interpretation. "Sacagawea" was her first historical character
and to date has presented to numerous adult groups, civic
organizations, and to well over a thousand school children.
"When I was growing up, American History was
presented as lifeless, dry, and without passion. What
student wouldn't want to learn about daily life, heroic
deeds, personal sacrifice, treachery, and victory from
our past? It is my goal to incite interest, and a hunger
for such stories of America's many heroes. The first
person delivery can be a powerful medium!"
Nancy worked with Dorris Ranch for three years
in presenting many of our local characters of the past.
She is currently participating with Willamalane, Lane
ESD, and Lane County Historical Museum in the Hands onHistory
(HOH) Traveling Road Show. It travels to Lane
County schools presenting three different time periods including, Lewis & Clark
Expedition, Oregon Trail, and the Civil War. In addition to "Sacagawea,” Nancy
portrays "Mrs.
Eugene Skinner" (cofounder of Eugene), and "Mrs. Mary Ann Webster
Loughborough,” wife
of a Confederate officer who lived underground in a cave during the siege of
Vicksburg. |
